About CQC

We are the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and adult social care services in England.

Our purpose:

We make sure health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high quality care and we encourage care services to improve.

Our role:

We monitor, inspect and regulate services to make sure they meet fundamental standards of quality and safety and we publish what we find, including performance ratings to help people choose care.

Our Principles

We put people who use services at the centre of our work.

We are independent, rigorous, fair and consistent.

We have an open and accessible culture.

We work in partnership across the health and social care system.

We are committed to being a high performing organisation and apply   the  same standards of continuous improvement to ourselves that we expect of others.

We promote equality, diversity and human rights

We are making changes to how we work. We’re improving the way we listen to what people are saying about services, and radically changing our inspections, with bigger more expert teams who will rate services so people can better understand our judgement.

Our three Chief Inspectors of hospitals, social care and general practice will lead expert inspection teams that include CQC specialist inspectors, health professionals relevant to the service they’re inspecting i.e. doctors, nurses, GPs, dentists, social workers and trained members of the public, who help us to understand what it’s like to be cared for in the services we’re inspecting, who we call Experts by Experience.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Equality and Human Rights at work

We are keen to recruit people with a wide range of skills and experiences and an understanding of issues for a range of people using health and social care services.

We welcome applications from people, regardless of age, disability, gender, gender reassignment, race, religion or belief, sexual orientation, marital or civil partnership status or pregnancy or maternity status.

We particularly encourage applications from disabled people and people from black and minority ethnic communities who are currently underrepresented in the organisation.

Our Equality Objectives include: building a diverse workforce, ensuring staff are treated fairly at work and ensuring all staff have the learning and development they need on equality and human rights in order to undertake their job role. Our Equality Objectives are available on our website here.

We have an equality and diversity policy covering staffing issues.

We also carry out equality and human rights impact assessments to make sure our other Human Resources policies positively reinforce and support our Equality and Diversity agenda. We have a specific policy covering making reasonable adjustments for disabled staff.

We use monitoring information provided by our staff and by job applicants to check that we do not discriminate in employment and to plan any positive action to address inequality.
CQC supports three staff equality networks

The staff equality networks help CQC to develop our equality practice, as well as providing peer support for staff.

CQC Disability Network
CQC Race Equality Network
CQC Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans Equality Network

Our annual equality report - Equality Counts - gives more details of our equality work, both in how we regulate services and in equality for our workforce and is available here.
