A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. A new international airport now offers a weekly scheduled flight from Johannesburg. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

Offering OTC advice and prescribing for minor ailments, you will work closely with the outpatient triage nurse, managing discharge prescriptions and counselling where necessary. Monitoring prescriptions and advising clinicians on all aspects of medication, you must evaluate and keep abreast of new medications and advise on their adoption. You will utilise the electronic medical record system and maintain and update the Directorate’s Patient Group Directions, drug prescribing guidance and the St Helena Formulary.

In collaboration with clinical colleagues you will maintain, update and monitor compliance with the St Helena Formulary and other pharmaceutical guidelines. This will include attending ward rounds and other meetings with clinical staff to input and advise on prescribing behaviours. You will be supported by three dispensers, a store keeper and a split-post dispenser/store-keeper.

Holding a Pharmacy degree with registration and good standing with the General Pharmaceutical Council you must have post-registration clinical experience. Being on-call will be a key requirement as is Saturday-working on a rotational basis.

We offer an extensive benefits package with 30 days leave pa, fare paid travel, freight, pension contribution and relocation allowance (see overseas vacancy information).
