We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Biological Products to join Healthcare Quality and Access Group. This role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf, London. We are currently implementing a hybrid way of working, with many colleagues working a minimum of 4 days per month in the office, building up to a minimum of 8 days over the coming months. The remainder of time can be worked remotely, or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly.


Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.


The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.


The Innovative Medicines function delivers a risk appropriate critical appraisal of quality, safety and efficacy of innovative medicinal products, determining whether a product’s benefits outweighs the risks. It aims to accelerate their route to market to drive earlier patient access. Through this function the Agency will be seen as a leader in facilitating early access to safe and innovative medicines attracting the life sciences sector and contributing to a positive patient experience and to the improvement of public health outcomes.


The successful candidate will be part of the Innovative Medicines management team providing leadership and support to the respective teams. You will be working with the Deputy Director and colleagues from across the Agency, including Science Research & Innovation to contribute to the wider MHRA One Agency agenda and vision, influencing the national and international collaborations for development of these products.  You will provide leadership to a multidisciplinary team and drive the critical appraisal of benefits and risks of advanced therapy products and new biological medicines including biosimilars.


The successful candidate will ensure the quality of assessment decisions to protect public health, managing workload and allocation within the team, working in conjunction with teams across Healthcare Quality and Access to ensure the right skills are deployed on the right work, and communication with applicants is effective, to achieve proportionate regulatory decisions without unnecessary delays to access.


Who are we looking for?


The successful candidate will be an inspiring leader with a track record of working in a pressurised, high demand environment, delivering results while maintaining high standards. You will be a good communicator with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and take responsibility for achieving a successful outcome.


You will have knowledge and experience in the development or authorisation of biological medicines, biosimilar products and advanced therapy medicinal products, including knowledge of relevant regulations. You will have previous experience in one or more of, regulatory affairs, research and development, and quality control of medicinal products within academia or the pharmaceutical industry. You will have a degree in pharmacy, medicine or science with registration with the corresponding royal college or council.


As part of accepting this role you have accepted an assignment duration of 3 years which sets out the minimum period of time that you are expected to remain in this post to deliver agreed key business outcomes and build capability in the role.
